Clue scrolls

A Clue scroll is a trail of riddles that turns up while you work a skill. Follow it to the end and it becomes a Wayfarer's casket of prizes, some of which no shop sells.

Finding a scroll

Every successful chop, catch, ore, forage, cooked dish, smelted bar, smithed piece and lit fire has a 1 in 70 chance to turn one up. Combat and shops never give one.

You can hold one scroll at a time, in your pack or your bank. While you have one, a roll that would have found another only puts a line in the chat. With a full pack, the scroll falls at your feet.

Following the trail

Read the scroll to see the step you are on. A trail has 2 to 5 steps, and each is one of three kinds:

  • Dig: a riddle names a spot. Stand on it, or within 1 tile of it, with a Spade in your pack, and dig. The wrong spot only digs up earth.
  • Ask: a riddle names a person. Talk to them, and the scroll rewrites itself while they speak.
  • Work: a riddle names a skilling action, usually in a named place, like chopping an oak near Oakhurst. Do it there.

The realm holds 99 steps: 36 digs, 28 people to ask and 35 pieces of work. 18 of them are across water, and a trail deals those only to a character who owns a Coastal skiff. A work step goes only to a character with the level to do the work.

The last step turns the scroll into a casket.

The casket

A casket holds 2 to 4 prizes. Each prize is rolled on this table:

PrizeChance
A bundle of sigils32%
600 to 4,000 coins20%
A piece of ordinary gear30%
A clue-only piece18%

Ordinary gear is any piece off the metal, hide, robe and staff ladders, weighted toward the low tiers: a bronze piece is nine times as likely as a Keeper's piece.

Clue-only pieces

The Wayfarer's pieces are the common find, the Lodestar pieces the rare one, and the pieces of the rare armour lines rarer still. Several also sit on the Dormant's chest prize lists.
